[06/13/2019] FOR ITS 18TH EDITION, SCOPITONE FESTIVAL IS INNOVATING AGAIN. EXHIBITIONS, FAMILY ACTIVITIES, AUDIOVISUAL PERFORMANCES, LIVE MUSIC... MORE AND MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO BE SURPRISED.

Scopitone is taking over the MiN's former grounds on the Île de Nantes, and offers one last opportunity to discover, before its demolition, an emblematic site transformed into a place of life and creation. This unique site brings together exhibitions, shows and concerts to offer a refined artistic program never seen before in the history of the festival. It thus invites the public to live surprising and unexpected experiences.

Now lasting ten days instead of five, the festival is also extending its daily schedules so that everyone can participate when it suits them best : during the day, after work or at the weekends. So many unique moments to allow everyone, in a jumble, to discover digital art installations, attend an audiovisual performance, dance to electro music live, participate in a family workshop, enjoy a guided tour or, quite simply, have a drink and grab a bite...

A PROTEAN PLACE TO LIVE MULTIPLE EXPERIENCES

For this new edition, Scopitone seeks to strengthen the festival-goer's experience by offering a multifaceted programme while discovering of this atypical place:

  • The Halle à marée (Tidal Hall), formerly dedicated to the seafood trade, will be the beating heart of the festival. It will host the living and dining areas on the ground floor, exhibitions in its frigos (former fridges) and audiovisual performances on a dedicated stage
  • Nearby, courtyards will host two covered outdoor stages, including a "central" stage (northern stage) that will offer the public a circular view of the artists.
  • The cellules (cells, ie. former wholesale stores) in the northern courtyard will also be occupied all week long by conferences, exhibitions, performances as well as immersive experiences during the second weekend.

An atypical place to meet and showcase many ideas, most of them free access (only the opening night and the evenings of 20th and 21th September are charged).

MORE THAN FIFTEEN ARTISTS ON EXHIBITION

Accessible every day from 13th to 22nd September (except Monday the 16th when the site will be closed), the twenty or so digital art installations on display will highlight the work of 18 international artists (France, Germany, United States, Belgium...). Among these, 8 works will have their French Premiere (Brume, Offset XYZ, Soft takeover, Meandering River, Pavilion, Prix digital choc 2019) or World Premiere (MASS II, structure.workshop.installation).

A few similarities can be found among the artworks :

MONUMENTAL WORKS

  • Lawrence Malstaf (BE) - Pavilion: the Belgian artist will present a 15m high installation: two large sails attached to a motorised mast, like a lighthouse in the heart of the Halle à marée.
  • Amanda Parer (AU) - Fantastic planet: two giants with a 10m wingspan, illuminated at nightfall, inspired by the animated film La Planète sauvage (1973) in which a futuristic society is governed by oversized humanoids.
  • Guillaume Cousin (FR) - Le Silence des particules: a gigantic gun machine projects large circles of smoke that move slowly in the glow of warm light.

NATURE AND PHYSICAL PHENOMENA

  • David Bowen (US) - tele-present wind: a wave symphony of 42 branches, orchestrated by the wind, of which the intensity is captured by an anemometer located in Minnesota.
  • Onformative (DE) - Meandering River: an installation exploring the behaviour of rivers - how water flows and circulates - and its transformative effects on geological spaces, using an algorithm that recreates this natural process.
  • Sebastian Wolf & Michael Kugler (DE / US) - Brume: clouds of water vapour reveal a strange mist, sublimated by a white light that helps to create a mysterious atmosphere.

QUIRKY

  • Dardex (FR) - Machine 2 Fish: the Dardex collective restores "hacking" to its original meaning: the art of diversion. Proof of this is the motorized wheelchair is driven by... a goldfish.

Also on exhibit at Scopitone are the artists Andreas Lutz (DE), Kris Verdonck (BE), Thomas Garnier (FR), Alex Verhaest (BE), Chevalvert (FR), Julien Bayle & Frédéric Hérau (FR), Vincent Leroy (FR), Hovver (AU / US), Scenocosme (FR), Screen Club & Superscript² (FR)

RENDEZ-VOUS DU LABO

Roundtables, conferences, workshops and tours for professionals

Open to all digital creation enthusiasts, professionals, artists, students or educated amateurs, the Rendez-vous du Labo puts the festival's programming in perspective by offering times for exchange and practice. They represent a unique opportunity to discover the festival's artists through conferences, workshops or roundtables, and to better understand the issues they address.

This year, the Rendez-vous du Labo will focus on two main themes: questioning the relationship between future and technologies on the one hand, and reflecting on the lines of tension at work in the digital art world (ecology, parity, conservation) on the other.

RENDEZ-VOUS DU LABO

For the first time, we also propose PRO PASSES.

AFTERWORKS & FOODTRUCKS

Punctuating the week, the festival has planned electro music mixes early in the evening. The DJ collectives from Nantes - Abstrack, Déviations sonores, Goûtez electronique, Androgyne, Sweat Lodge, Paco Tyson, OR'L, Alan.D - will thus make their musical mark on the festival.

A daily opportunity to enjoy a friendly moment in the heart of the Halle à marée, with a drink and a bite to eat.

"Discovering, experimenting and exchanging are the key words of this edition. As never before, Scopitone will shine, resonate with sounds and images and vibrate to the rhythm of those who write this magical adventure of digital arts and electronic cultures."  Eric Boistard - Head of Stereolux
